Ok so I bought this engine during my build about a little over a month ago from BMIkarts.com and now that the kart is finished I started the break in process and on my 15 min ride around at 4000rpm my dad noticed oil coming out of the crankshaft and my clutch started smoking. We let it cool off removed the clutch and the oil seal looked perfect? My dad insisted I order a new one so I did. My question is, is it the oil seal? I was told on DIYgokarts that it might be a burr in the crankshaft and I should return it blah blah. Is it something worse the the seal or should I play it by ear, when I get the new seal see if it continues or if it is more then the seal will it hurt the engine. I'm a novice at this so my concern level is high.

Porkchop,
I would look into see if your chain is or became too tight. The side cover seal is a lip seal and a failure would be extremely rare without a secondary factor having an impact. A crankshaft that is overloaded or a clutch that is slipping (aka incredibly hot)are two thoughts that come to mind. Is it leaking between the seal and crankshaft or between the seal (outer dimension) and the side cover casting? There are aftermarket seals that are spring loaded that are available. IF you are going to attempt to change this out you need to be VERY careful in removing the seal as to not create a burr and that you replace the seal so that it is seated in the machined pocket perpendicular to the crank.

Can you see any issue just looking at it?

That's been our problem (my dad and I) we took the clutch off to take a look and we can't tell where on earth the oil is splashing out from. The chain is def not to tight it's a bit lose but not lose enough for the chain to jump off of. We plan on fixing that problem this is the least of our concerns. Yeah the clutch was super got and you saw a ring of oil when you remove the clutch outlining it. Like I said we can't tell if it's that ring because it looks fine. My dad is a machinic so I trust him when it comes to this stuff he told me to order a new seal I did. Our concern is that he isn't 100% sure if it is the seal or not. After work today I can post before and after pictures so you can see exactly see

I will e-mail you outside of the forum. The reason for the e-mail bouncing back is your file size attached is too big.
